Security Council Mission Visits Special Court

A Security Council's mission touring West Africa visited the premises of the Special Court on Friday in Sierra Leone's capital Freetown. The leader of the mission, Ambassador Jeremy Greenstock, said he was impressed with the Court's progress.

"I am amazed by what has been achieved here in such a short period of time," said the ambassador in the newly completed library of the 11.5 acre site. He added, "My country is doing all it can to ensure that member states provide the Special Court with the support it needs." Ambassador Greenstock is the Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations.

The delegation included ambassadors and senior diplomats representing fifteen countries on the Security Council. They came to Sierra Leone on the last leg of their tour, having visited Guinea Bissau, Nigeria, Ghana and Ivory Coast.

The mission did not visit Liberia although it is gathering information on the recent escalation of violence there. The Special Court has indicted the president of Liberia Charles Taylor for allegedly committing crimes against humanity.
