The Special Court has two Trial Chambers and one Appeals Chamber. Each Trial Chamber consists of three Judges, one appointed by the Government of Sierra Leone and two by the United Nations Secretary-General. In addition, one alternate judge was appointed by the Secretary General to Trial Chamber II in the case of Charles Taylor. The Appeals Chamber consists of five Judges, two appointed by the Government of Sierra Leone and three appointed by the Secretary-General. The Presiding Judge of the Appeals Chamber is the President of the Court. S/He is elected by a majority of the votes of the Judges appointed to the Appeals Chamber for a renewable term of one year. The Judges are appointed for a renewable term of three years.
